In the beginning…

In the beginning, there was CAOS (Commodore Amiga Operating System)

But as time rapidly marched forward, it became obvious to everyone that some of the elements of the original CAOS couldn’t possibly be ready in time for the Amigas launch in 1985.  So it was decided that they would instead get a version of TRIPOS ported over, to form the basis of the AmigaDOS (Disk Operating System).  This became the dos.library module in Kickstart, but it also meant that many of the features that had originally been planned would not be in the final product.
